These young, future leaders - Savanna, Ethan and Mia – stepped into the shoes of the city's Junior Mayor and Councillors and were accompanied by the Mayor of Chichester, Mr Craig Gershater, and the Mayoress, Mrs Judy Gershater. For the day, all three pupils had the unique opportunity to take on the role and responsibilities that usually belong to an elected official. It gave them a chance to see first-hand how a city is run, to understand the challenges and opportunities it presents, and to influence decisions that affect their lives. The Junior Mayor, Mia, was delighted to be nominated alongside her fellow peers; she said: “This was a fantastic learning opportunity. Altogether, it was a truly amazing day and the mayor and mayoress were lovely people.”

One of the most exciting parts of the day was the school visit. The Junior Mayor and Councillors had the privilege of visiting their own school, where they engaged with fellow students to discuss their vision for a better Chichester. As part of this visit, they planted an olive tree in the grounds of the school to help the environment and reduce our carbon footprint. The Mayor explained that the olive tree is a symbol of peace across Chichester.

Throughout the day, the young leaders attended meetings at the County Hall, participated in discussions about local issues, and even visited key city landmarks like the Chichester Festival Theatre and the Fire Station. This immersive experience helped them gain insight into the daily operations of city government, including how decisions are made and the challenges faced in creating a thriving, inclusive community.
